The Indian Uncertainity -May 23
Last six-month has been a period of great uncertainties, speculations and drama for INDIA. Though, as a country, India has grown economically but politically it has seen a rough time with all political parties together creating a frenzied, anarchical and condemnable environment.
Two leading parties along with their allies have started a perpetual cycle of allegations against each other with self-certified evidence. Both parties accusing each other, of huge scams in deals and contracts awarded during their tenure, are the common rhetorics nowadays. Party spokesperson seems to be the most legible person certifying everyone's integrity and character with overwhelming facts and figures. Social media is turned into a battleground where parties fight a virtual war of perception using anything that can derogate others and support them.
Even news media has turned partisan with different platform lobbying directly or indirectly for or against by sensitizing minimal things and creating hue and cry over things which is best to be left behind. A rather unintentional "misstatement or gesture" becomes a piece of breaking news with various channels interpreting it differently. On news channels, what used to be constructive and fruitful debates of different stakeholder earlier has nowadays turned into hysterical public shaming of each other with no respect and sensitiveness to the platform and audience they serve.
All the chaos spread in the country in the name of elections though temporary and may recede after some time but its effects on the citizens especially youth may be permanent. The kind of environment which we are exposing our youth with their nascent and developing thought process may be dangerous for the potentially bright future of our country. It creates doubt as well as lack of faith in the political institutions and politics of INDIA. By seeing the ongoing political scenario of loathing and demeaning, instead of being intrigued by our rich political history as well as renowned leaders they may start to detest it.
Indian demography promises to hold great potential for economic growth. As per 2011 IMF working paper, by 2026 the average Indian age would be 29 with a large number of working population. Young population, a gift of the demographic dividend, may become a boon for economic growth turning India into Global Powerhouse. But, economic growth needs to be complemented with political as well as social growth then only it will be all around development in a true sense. For this to happen, young citizens of our country need to be provided with an environment where they are encouraged to take part in the political discourse of our country. They should see politics as an integral and constructive instrument for the development of a country rather than to abhor it. Responsibility of providing such environment to young minds lies with the government, political institution along with their leaders and society as well.
Elections are mandated by constitution where each nominee has right to propagate their agenda to win it, but "The festival of democracy should not hamper the growth of democracy".
